#After two months since the release of the Top Gun sequel in cinemas, we already know that no one will surpass Tom Cruise in this year’s earnings. The studio waited and waited, wasn’t want to release the film in theaters during the pandemic. And indeed, they chose the perfect date for its release. Maverick became not only a successful sequel but also the highest-grossing film Tom ever made.
Cruise will earn more than 100 million
The fixed amount that To Cruise earned for the novelty Maverick was 13 million dollars. It wouldn’t even put him in the top ten highest-grossing actors of the year, so how is it possible, that he ended up taking the top spot? In addition to a fixed salary, Cruise also signed a contract thanks to which he would receive approximately 10% of worldwide cinema sales.
Since the movie really scored in theaters and has already earned more than a billion (not including the Chinese and Russian markets), it is clear that Cruise will earn more than 100 million. Combined with the fixed salary and the fact that the film is still playing in US theaters, he will end up with a three-figure sum even after taxes.
The Paramount Pictures studio can also look forward to it, as they will also get a three-digit sum. Since the film cost 170 million dollars and the earnings have already exceeded a billion, after deducting the profit for the distributor and the cinemas themselves, the studio will have approximately 300 million dollars. That is if he didn’t earn a cent anymore. And that’s quite a package for a film with zero expectations.
Others settle for „little bits“
Cruise originally had nothing to do with the list of the highest-grossing actors of the year. The top 10 was originally supposed to look like this:
- Denzel Washington – $20 million for The Equalizer 3
- Joaquin Phoenix – $20 million for Joker 2
- Tom Hardy – $20 million for Venom 3
- Vin Diesel – $20 million for the movie Fast X
- Chris Hemsworth – $20 million for Extraction 2
- Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds – $20 million for Spirited
- Dwayne Johnson – $22.5 (+ sales) million for Black Adam
- Brad Pitt – $30 million for a film about a Formula 1 racer (untitled yet)
- Leonardo DiCaprio – $30 million for Killers of the Flower Moon
- Will Smith – $35 million for Emancipation
Names such as Eddie Murphy, Chris Pine, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, and Timothée Chalamet would finish just behind the top ten highest-paid actors. Many of the most expensive projects are sequels, which is very sad. On the other hand, only two women will appear in the top 20 – Margot Robbie for Joker 2 and Millie Bobby Brown for the new Elona Holmes movie for Netflix.
